Bengal head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla has addressed growing speculation over Mohammed Shami’s fitness after the fast bowler skipped the team’s Ranji Trophy clash against Services. Shukla confirmed Shami was intentionally rested following a high workload in the previous round against Delhi, where he took four wickets in 17.3 overs, including nine maidens.
The decision to leave him out of India’s New Zealand T20I squad—despite his strong domestic form—sparked debate, especially as veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar was recalled instead. Shami, who has not played Test cricket since the 2023 World Test Championship final, remains a key figure in Bengal’s attack, having claimed 37 wickets in seven Ranji matches last season at an average of 16.72.
His omission from the national team has reignited discussions about his long-term fitness and future role in India’s lineup, with former selector Ajit Agarkar previously questioning his match readiness. Bengal’s opening-day collapse against Services saw 15 wickets fall, with the team bowled out for 184, though Shami remained involved with the squad, training and consulting with the physio throughout the match.
