Freshman quarterback Tommy Carr, 19, made his first collegiate start against defending College Football Playoff champion Indiana in front of a packed hometown crowd. Playing on the historic field where his father Jason played, grandfather Lloyd coached and maternal grandfather Tom Curtis was an All‑American, Carr showed flashes of improvisation but also rookie mistakes, finishing 20‑for‑32 for 167 yards with an interception and a fumble.
Indiana’s quarterback Josh Hoover completed 8 of 18 passes for 81 yards and also threw a pick. Michigan ultimately fell 13‑6 after a 6‑6 tie was broken in overtime, and coach Kyle Whittingham noted the loss came against a No. 6 team, while play‑calling by Jason Beck was cited as a factor in the narrow defeat.
