NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan confirmed the termination of head coach Dave Doeren following a 31-28 defeat by Stanford, which dropped the Wolfpack to a 3-4 record. Doeren's 14-year tenure concluded with a 98-73 overall record, during which the program secured 10 winning seasons and 10 bowl berths but never achieved a 10-win campaign.
The search for a successor has drawn attention to several candidates, including Memphis head coach Charles Huff, who is 32-20 in four seasons at Marshall and has guided his current team to a 6-2 start and five consecutive bowl games. Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson is also a contender, having overseen the development of quarterbacks Cam Ward, Carson Beck, and Darian Mensah over the past three years.
Additionally, Appalachian State coach Dowell Loggains, who has led his team to a 5-2 start including an upset of James Madison, and James Madison head coach Billy Napier, who is 69-35 across his stints at Louisiana, Florida, and James Madison, are being considered for the vacancy.
