Mike Hesson open to coaching Pakistan in Tests, leaves final call with PCB after England debacle: ‘Enough talent there’

Following a comprehensive 3-0 series sweep by England, Pakistan's interim red-ball mentor Mike Hesson has indicated a willingness to accept the Test coaching position on a full-time basis. The New Zealander, who currently handles Pakistan's limited-overs sides, stepped in for Sarfaraz Ahmed ahead of the Edgbaston fixture after the Mohsin Naqvi-led administration abruptly sent home two staff members and seven squad members following setbacks at Headingley and Lord's.

Despite an eight-wicket loss in Birmingham, the tourists mounted a late push by amassing 449 runs in their second turn at bat—their lone score above 200 all tour—highlighted by newcomer Razaullah claiming four dismissals and striking 81 runs featuring nine maximums.

Hesson emphasized that future discussions regarding the red-ball post will likely occur ahead of the Asian Games, his immediate white-ball priority, stating that Pakistan possesses the raw ability needed to advance under proper guidance. The tactician additionally disclosed that the England and Wales Cricket Board had contacted his representative regarding their Test vacancy after dismissing Brendon McCullum earlier in the season.

Hesson declined to pursue the England opening due to his existing obligations to Pakistan through the World Cup, leaving the English role to be filled by Stephen Fleming.
