Penn State head coach Matt Campbell faced another setback in the recruiting trail as four-star quarterback Will Wood, a top Massachusetts prospect in the Class of 2027, announced his decision to flip his commitment from the Nittany Lions to Boston College. Wood, who initially chose Penn State after the hiring of Campbell, cited a desire to stay closer to home and play for coach Bill O’Brien as key factors in his decision.
The move marks a notable loss for Campbell, who has struggled to rebuild Penn State’s recruiting momentum following several high-profile defections from the Class of 2026 to Virginia Tech. Wood’s flip also leaves Penn State without two of the three elite quarterbacks from Massachusetts who had committed to Power 5 programs, as Peter Bourque previously de-committed from Michigan and ultimately chose Virginia Tech over Penn State and Georgia.
The loss underscores the challenges Campbell has faced in stabilizing the program’s recruiting trajectory since taking over as head coach.
