Martinez outburst Q&A: Wilcox, transfer strategy and what next for United?

Lisandro Martínez’s post-match criticism of Manchester United’s transfer strategy has reignited scrutiny over the club’s financial approach under director of football Jason Wilcox. After a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid, Martínez publicly questioned the lack of summer spending, framing his frustration as a broader issue with the club’s leadership.

While his remarks echo growing fan dissatisfaction, Wilcox remains fully backed by United’s hierarchy, including chief executive Omar Berrada and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who have approved his long-term plan to rebuild the squad incrementally rather than through costly short-term fixes. The strategy, informed by data analytics led by director of data and AI Michael Sansoni, prioritizes strengthening attack—evident in the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha—over immediate defensive overhauls, reflecting a deliberate shift toward improving goal-scoring efficiency as the primary pathway to competitive success.
