Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham wasted no time in highlighting the standout performance of freshman quarterback Tommy Carr following Saturday’s hard-fought 21-18 comeback win over Penn State. Carr entered the game midway through the second quarter after starter Bryce Underwood faltered in the first half, completing just five of 11 passes for 43 yards and throwing two interceptions, leaving Michigan trailing 3-0 at halftime.
Carr’s entry reignited the Wolverines’ offense, which had been completely shut out in the first 30 minutes. He finished the game with five completions on seven attempts for 47 yards, added 36 rushing yards, and scored a touchdown, accounting for all of Michigan’s points in the victory.
Beyond his on-field contributions, Whittingham praised Carr’s preparation and work ethic, noting the freshman’s relentless effort in the film room and his growing influence in the locker room. The coach emphasized Carr’s ability to handle pressure, including a key touchdown run and a well-executed pitch in the final drive, while maintaining composure with no turnovers in the second half.
Whittingham described Carr’s development as remarkable for a true freshman, underscoring his rapid progress and the respect he’s earned from teammates after stepping into the starting role.
