Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is openly considering a major shakeup at quarterback after the Longhorns’ second straight loss, this time a 27-24 upset at the hands of unranked Florida. The defeat marked the second time in as many weeks that Texas failed to hold a commanding lead, collapsing from a 17-3 advantage in the final three quarters.
Arch Manning, the team’s projected first-round NFL draft pick, was a central figure in the collapse, struggling against Florida’s backup quarterback, Tramell Jones Jr., and fumbling late to seal the loss. Manning’s recent performances have been inconsistent, including two interceptions in Texas’s prior loss to Oklahoma and another costly turnover in the Florida game, where he also threw two picks despite a brief resurgence in Week 7 with 173 passing yards and a touchdown on 14-of-20 attempts.
Sarkisian emphasized that the team’s offensive struggles have put every aspect of the roster under review, leaving open the possibility of benching Manning in favor of a more stable option. Backup quarterback Karle Lacey Jr., a highly recruited prospect from Alabama, could emerge as a viable alternative if Sarkisian believes he can revitalize the offense.
With Texas facing four ranked opponents in their next four games, the window for a turnaround is narrowing, and the Longhorns’ playoff hopes now hinge on whether Sarkisian can find a solution to their quarterback instability.
