Andrea Kimi Antonelli enters Sunday's grand prix facing a significant physical challenge while on the verge of clinching his maiden world championship. The twenty-year-old Mercedes driver qualified in fourth position for the upcoming race, sitting directly behind his primary title rivals George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
Antonelli only requires a top-nine finish or a minimum of two points to secure the title regardless of his competitors' results. Despite battling a high fever, stomach issues, and low energy levels since Thursday, he managed to secure a spot on the second row of the grid.
He admitted to feeling extra pressure from constant public chatter about the championship outcome while trying to maintain his focus on track.
The Italian driver missed the media day prior to the weekend due to his sudden illness, which severely disrupted his sleep schedule in the days leading up to qualifying. After struggling to find sufficient grip on new tyres during the final qualifying session, he successfully preserved a fresh set for race day.
To combat his lingering exhaustion, Antonelli plans to take high doses of melatonin in order to achieve ten hours of rest ahead of the crucial event. With his rivals starting immediately ahead of him, he remains optimistic about utilizing his saved tyres to advance during the grand prix.
