Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli locked in pole position for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, edging out Red Bull rival Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds in a competitive qualifying session. The 20-year-old Italian, who is currently the runaway leader in the championship, now has a mathematical opportunity to secure his first world title and become the youngest champion in F1 history during Sunday's race.
To achieve this feat, Antonelli must take victory while his teammate George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton places fifth.
Antonelli, who has already claimed seven pole positions this season, acknowledged the difficulty of the session, noting that gusty winds made the final qualifying run unpredictable. Although Ferrari dominated all three practice sessions, their pace declined significantly in qualifying, leaving Charles Leclerc and Hamilton more than two tenths of a second behind the front runners.
Isack Hadjar secured third place for Red Bull, while Russell qualified sixth ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, the latter of whom had a lap deleted for track limits violations. Grid penalties will also impact the starting order, with Gabriel Bortoleto dropping to the back of the field and Franco Colapinto falling to 21st.
