The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing to trim their roster ahead of the season opener against the Golden State Warriors, and head coach JJ Redick has subtly pointed to Dalton Knecht as the likely candidate for waivers. With the team needing to reduce from 16 to 15 players, Redick acknowledged the roster’s shift, noting that Knecht—despite progress over the past two seasons—faces an uphill battle amid a crowded wing rotation.
The Lakers now boast multiple capable options, including Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, Adou Thiero, Cameron Carr, and Jake LaRavia, while Jarred Vanderbilt remains a trade rumour fixture. Knecht’s path to retention grew narrower after a failed trade attempt to the Charlotte Hornets earlier this year, which was voided due to Mark Williams’ physical issues.
Though a trade could still materialize, Redick’s remarks suggest waiving Knecht may be the most straightforward solution as Opening Night approaches.
