Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia reignited a contentious debate this week by publicly questioning the decision to acquire Kevin Durant in a high-profile 2023 trade, calling the move a misalignment with his vision for the franchise. Durant, who joined the Suns in a blockbuster deal involving Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, and multiple future draft picks, responded with a sharp social media post mocking Ishbia’s remarks.
Despite averaging 26.8 points per game over two-plus seasons in Phoenix, the Suns failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs during Durant’s tenure, culminating in a sweep by Oklahoma City in 2025. The team also missed the playoffs entirely in 2024, prompting Durant’s eventual trade to Houston in July 2025 for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and additional draft capital.
Ishbia later clarified his stance, emphasizing the Suns’ focus on rebuilding with a defined ‘DNA’ for players and culture, though Durant’s departure marked a turning point in the franchise’s direction under new ownership. The Suns, now under Ishbia’s leadership since his $2.28 billion purchase in early 2023, have since shifted strategy toward long-term development over immediate star acquisitions.
