Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia’s blunt remarks about the team’s approach to acquiring Kevin Durant have sparked a sharp rebuttal from the two-time NBA champion. During a recent interview, Ishbia dismissed the idea that signing Durant—who joined the Suns in a high-profile deal—would guarantee a championship, instead framing the move as a financial solution to the team’s roster needs.
Durant, however, took to social media to push back, accusing Ishbia of downplaying his on-court contributions, particularly his performance at age 36, while also hinting at lingering tensions between the franchise and its former star. The Suns’ relationship with Durant soured after the team traded him to the Houston Rockets in a blockbuster seven-team deal last July, following a disappointing tenure in Phoenix that included just one playoff series win and a missed postseason appearance in 2024–25.
Durant averaged 26.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists over two and a half seasons with the Suns, but his departure came after the organization reportedly explored a last-ditch effort to trade him back to the Golden State Warriors ahead of the 2025 deadline—an attempt Durant later learned about from external sources, leaving him frustrated by the lack of transparency from the front office.
