Two-time ATP Finals champion Jannik Sinner has announced the premature end of his 2026 season due to a persistent knee injury, forgoing his title defense in Turin. The Italian star, who claimed his first Wimbledon crown earlier this year, has not competed since the grass-court major and will prioritize medical treatment over tournament play.
His absence from the ATP Finals—where he was a two-time defending champion—will also leave a void in the year-end rankings race, as he was one of only three players (alongside Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev) already locked into the invite-only event. Sinner’s withdrawal follows a strong spring hardcourt season, during which he won six titles, including the Sunshine Double, while going 44-0 in matches played.
With the Australian Open just three months away, fans will hope his recovery allows him to return to form next year, though Zverev is poised to claim the year-end No. 1 ranking in his absence.
The early-career injuries plaguing both Sinner and Alcaraz have raised concerns about the longevity of tennis’s top players at such a pivotal stage in their careers.
