Evaluating current limited-overs options on his digital broadcast channel, former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin expressed the view that Axar Patel currently ranks above Ravindra Jadeja for national white-ball duties. Ashwin pointed to the subtle skills required for modern finger spinners, noting that Axar successfully performs team assignments despite the hurdles of the role.
This assessment arrives as both left-arm spin options compete for roles leading up to the 2027 global fifty-over tournament, following Jadeja's return after an eight-month absence from the squad. During the recent Asian Games title match against Pakistan, Axar contributed bowling figures of two wickets for twenty-nine runs across four overs.
Over the competition, he accumulated four dismissals from two outings at an average of nine point two five and an economy of five point two eight. In contrast, Jadeja collected only two wickets during a recent series against the West Indies at an average of sixty-four point five zero and an economy of six point four five, ultimately sitting out the final fixture.
Ashwin additionally suggested that Washington Sundar possesses strong technical abilities but currently receives insufficient match time to fully develop his bowling craft. Sundar also claimed two wickets for twenty-nine runs from four overs in the Asian Games showdown against Pakistan, removing batters Sahibzada Farhan and Abdul Samad.
Furthermore, Ashwin cautioned against evaluating Axar's international Twenty20 capabilities based upon his domestic franchise performances, emphasizing the distinct nature of league competition versus international play where the bowler handles powerplay and middle-over responsibilities effectively.
