Uefa investigating Republic of Ireland-Israel row after spitting accusation

European football governing officials have opened a formal probe into a fiery confrontation between the Republic of Ireland and Israel squads following an allegation of spitting. The controversial Group B3 fixtures faced heavy pre-match scrutiny due to the Israel-Gaza war, prompting protests in Dublin by the Irish Sport for Palestine pressure group and a withdrawal by Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu before the matches went ahead at neutral sites.

Tensions spilled over at full-time in Serbia as players locked horns, with Irish manager Hallgrimsson accusing opponents of intimidation tactics while his counterpart Ran Ben-Shimon claimed ignorance of any tunnel altercation.
