Holger Rune has pulled out of the Brussels Open after a minor back issue forced his withdrawal, the 23-year-old Danish tennis star confirmed in a brief statement. Though scans showed no serious damage, the setback—coming just days before the ATP 250 event—will delay his return to competition, with Rune now targeting a comeback in just a few days of rest.
The absence marks another hurdle for the former world No. 4, who has struggled to regain his ranking footing after a near-full season sidelined by an Achilles injury last year.
His recent return included a strong Davis Cup performance in September, where he won both singles matches for Denmark, including a victory over Grigor Dimitrov, but his first two tour-level appearances since then ended in first-round exits at the Japan Open and Shanghai Masters. With the Brussels Open serving as an early test of the European indoor hard-court season, Rune’s absence leaves a notable gap in the field, which also includes veteran David Goffin’s final home event before retirement.
