Isiah Thomas is returning to a formal position with the organization as Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation prepares to divide its holdings into two distinct entities next month. The upcoming corporate restructuring will create separate publicly traded companies for the basketball and hockey operations, pending finalization by both the NBA and the NHL.
Thomas will join the governing board overseeing the basketball side, a non-employee duty accountable to investors rather than a personnel role affecting team management. This development brings the former coach and executive back into an official capacity following his previous stints leading the franchise from 2003 through 2008, during which the team compiled a losing record under his direction.
Additional franchise leadership changes involve former executive Steve Mills moving from the parent corporation's governing board to the newly formed hockey corporation's board.
