India secured a commanding eight-wicket victory against the West Indies in the opening match of their ODI series after successfully chasing down a target of 295 runs with more than eight overs remaining on Sunday at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Shubman Gill won the coin toss and elected to field first, allowing the visitors to post a total of 295/7 courtesy of a maiden century from Justin Greaves and an unbeaten half-century by Amir Jangoo, while Kuldeep Yadav claimed four crucial wickets for India during the middle overs.
In response, Virat Kohli orchestrated the successful chase with an unbeaten 139 off 88 deliveries, reaching his 55th ODI century and passing the milestone of 15,000 career runs in the format alongside a strong 110-run contribution from opening partner Shubman Gill.
