Iga Swiatek secured a spot in the China Open round of 16 after overcoming a difficult deficit to defeat Donna Vekic in three sets. Despite the victory, the eighth-seeded Pole admitted to feeling significant irritation during the match because her performance level did not meet her own expectations.
She managed to rally from a 2-5 disadvantage in the second set to eventually prevail 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 after nearly three hours of play. Following a previous straight-sets win against Gao Xinyu, Swiatek now prepares to face Iva Jovic, who advanced by beating Kamilla Rakhimova.
This result keeps the world number nine in contention for a qualifying spot in the WTA Finals, as she currently sits 10th in the race for the year-end tournament.
