The Charlotte Hornets have scheduled a ceremony for February 11, 2027, to honor Muggsy Bogues by retiring his number 1 jersey. Standing at five-foot-three, the former point guard remains the smallest athlete to ever compete in the league, and he will now hold the record for the shortest player to receive this specific franchise tribute.
Originally selected by the Washington Bullets in the 1987 draft, Bogues joined the Hornets during their inaugural season and eventually became the organization's career leader in steals. He was a key contributor during the team's most successful decade, playing alongside teammates such as Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning.
Beyond his on-court production, which included multiple seasons of double-digit assist averages, Bogues gained pop-culture recognition for his appearance in the film Space Jam. He will join Bobby Phills and Dell Curry as the only individuals to have their jerseys retired by the franchise.
