Heroes, zeros from sloppy Yankees Game 2 loss to Rays: Brooklyn’s Richie Palacios opened it up for Tampa Bay

October 6, 2026

The Tampa Bay Rays extended their postseason dominance with a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Division Series on Monday night at Tropicana Field, taking a commanding 2-0 series lead. Richie Palacios delivered a pivotal performance for the Rays, driving in two runs with a two-run RBI single in the fifth inning, which opened up the game for Tampa Bay.

The Rays’ small-ball approach and relentless execution forced the Yankees into a defensive tailspin, culminating in four errors—three of them in the first inning alone—that directly contributed to runs for Tampa Bay. The Yankees’ defensive collapse was the defining story of the game, as misplays turned routine plays into scoring opportunities.

Yandy Díaz capitalized on a throwing error in the first inning.

Tampa Bay’s pitching staff, led by Freddy Peralta, who held the Yankees to two runs over the course of the game, maintained their postseason dominance by limiting New York’s scoring chances. The Rays’ bullpen entered Game 3 fully rested after strong performances in Games 1 and 2.

Bryan Baker sealed the win with a groundout in the ninth inning.

Cam Schlittler, the Yankees’ starting pitcher, struck out just twice and allowed the Rays to score four runs in the fifth inning. The Rays’ offense, fueled by Palacios’ clutch hitting and contributions from Junior Caminero and Jonathan Aranda in the fifth, overwhelmed the Yankees’ offense, which managed only two runs despite Ben Rice’s two solo home runs.

The Yankees’ lineup struggled against Tampa Bay’s pitching, failing to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities.

Aaron Boone, the Yankees’ manager, acknowledged the severity of the loss, stating, ‘It's gut check time. You've got to, again, pick yourself up. As bad as it was, it's a loss.’ His remarks underscored the urgency for New York to regroup ahead of Game 3, which shifts to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

With the series now at a decisive 2-0 advantage, the Rays are one win away from advancing to the American League Championship Series (ALCS). Nick Martinez will take the mound for the Rays in Game 3, while Max Fried will start for the Yankees.

The Rays’ pitching staff has held the Yankees to just two runs in the first 18 innings of the series.

The Yankees must address their defensive vulnerabilities and offensive inconsistency to avoid elimination. The stakes could not be higher as the teams prepare to face off in front of their home crowd, with the Rays’ bullpen poised to play a pivotal role in securing their first ALCS berth since 2008.
