GB men 'on back foot' after Richardson withdrawal, but women take silver

October 14, 2026

Great Britain’s men’s track cycling team faced early challenges at the World Track Cycling Championships in Shanghai after Matt Richardson withdrew from competition amid misconduct allegations. The 27-year-old, who was set to compete in the individual sprint and keirin, pulled out on Monday, leaving the team sprint squad—Joe Truman, Ed Lowe, and Harry Ledingham-Horn—to navigate a difficult start.

Though they secured fifth in qualifying, they were eliminated in the first round by Australia, finishing behind them in a head-to-head race. Truman acknowledged the disruption, noting the team had to adapt to last-minute changes but remained focused on future goals, including Olympic qualification.

Meanwhile, the women’s team sprint squad—Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell, and Rhianna Parris-Smith—delivered a standout performance, winning silver after finishing first in qualifying and defeating France before falling to hosts China in the final. The men’s team pursuit and women’s scratch race also saw British progress, with the men finishing second fastest in qualifying and Abigail Miller placing 17th in the women’s scratch race.
