The football world is grieving the loss of Jesús de Miguel, the Tenerife striker who died after a violent collision during a Segunda División match against FC Andorra on Monday. The 2-2 draw in stoppage time ended tragically when de Miguel, already suffering head and chest injuries, suffered a fatal decline in health hours after the incident.
The match, which saw Owono receive a red card for the collision, was abandoned, leaving both teams and fans in shock. A minute’s silence was observed across European Champions League fixtures on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as all Europa and Conference League games this week, in honor of de Miguel’s legacy.
Tenerife has announced six official days of mourning, suspending all club activities and opening its stadium on Saturday for supporters to pay their respects. Spanish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, though prosecutors have downplayed the likelihood of criminal charges.
De Miguel’s death has united the football community in mourning, with fans and teammates paying tribute to his dedication and passion for Tenerife. The striker’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time, while the club’s president and supporters’ groups have expressed deep sorrow, describing the loss as a shared pain for the entire Canary Islands region.
