The FedEx Cup Fall season has delivered pivotal moments for several PGA Tour players as they race toward the 2027 campaign, which will operate under a new two-tiered system. Austin Smotherman has emerged as the standout performer, securing his first PGA Tour victory at the Bank of Utah Championship in his 100th career start.
The win not only earned him a two-year exemption but also guaranteed him a spot in the 2027 PGA Championship and Players Championship, along with a place in the PGA Tour’s Championship Series in 2028. Smotherman’s strong fall run has propelled him from an 80th-ranked standing at the season’s start to a position of stability for next year, having previously needed to play well to retain full privileges.
Meanwhile, Jacob Bridgeman and Michael Brennan have also capitalized on the fall slate, with Bridgeman adding a Biltmore Championship win to his already exempt status for 2027, and Brennan claiming victory at the Baycurrent Classic in Japan—his third win in the past year—while putting himself in contention for Ryder Cup consideration.
Others have made notable progress without winning, including Doug Ghim and Ben James. Ghim, who finished the regular season ranked 93rd and just outside the FedEx Cup playoffs, has climbed to 55th in the standings with three top-20 fall finishes, effectively locking in his full-time status for 2027 and a spot in the first two Signature Events.
James, who earned full exemption through 2027 after leading the PGA Tour University rankings in 2026, has moved from 108th to 62nd with strong fall performances, positioning himself for a potential start at Pebble Beach and Riviera next year. The fall season has become a critical proving ground as players navigate the shifting landscape of the PGA Tour’s new structure.
