Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed once formed one of golf’s most formidable Ryder Cup pairings, dominating their matches together in 2014 and 2016. At Gleneagles in 2014, they won both of their matches undefeated, and two years later at Hazeltine, they contributed 2.5 points from four outings, with Reed’s singles victory over Rory McIlroy sealing a key moment.
Their chemistry extended to the 2015 Presidents Cup, where they continued to excel as a duo. However, their dynamic shifted dramatically ahead of the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, where captain Jim Furyk chose not to pair them—a decision that sparked controversy amid Team USA’s heavy defeat.
Reed later accused Spieth of avoiding him, while Furyk faced criticism for the pairing strategy. Spieth later clarified in 2020 that no lasting tension existed between them, revealing that his preference for playing with Dustin Johnson at the Presidents Cup had actually energized Reed’s performance, with the two still celebrating their success together afterward.
Despite the 2018 rift, Spieth emphasized his lifelong bond with Justin Thomas, his closest friend and teammate since their junior golf days at Mansfield, where their rivalry and partnership began.
