Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player of 11 seasons, was required to watch Game 3 of the WNBA Finals between the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries on October 21 in a private luxury suite. This decision, made by the Dream and WNBA officials after Kanter Freedom contacted authorities and the league to report safety concerns, included the assignment of a state police officer to him.
Kanter Freedom, who claims to have received thousands of death threats and mentioned the assassination of Charlie Kirk, cited Gabby Williams as his inspiration for declaring his eligibility for the 2027 WNBA draft on August 7, stating he identifies as a woman.
Kanter Freedom expressed frustration, claiming he was banned from his original seats and sharing a video of a call with the league's security director. He had previously attended several WNBA games, which led to confrontations with players and controversy.
Valkyries forward Gabby Williams, who supports transgender athletes in women's sports, has stated that she would welcome such athletes on her team or as opponents.
