Former ESPN broadcaster Linda Cohn questioned the WNBA's anthem protocols after the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries were absent from the court during the national anthem before Games 1 and 2 of the WNBA Finals. Both teams exited the floor following their warmups and returned shortly after the anthem concluded, sparking social media debate.
Cohn urged the league to provide a clear explanation of its current policy to avoid fan confusion and potential alienation of new viewers.
The Valkyries stated that retreating to the locker room for the anthem has been their standard routine since the franchise's inception. Similarly, the Dream have followed this practice for several years.
Cohn noted that while players may not be violating an enforceable rule, the lack of transparency from the league office regarding expectations is problematic.
