Despite holding the third spot in the latest Associated Press and US LBM Coaches polls, the Fighting Irish continue to claim the top position in Sports Illustrated projections. Analyst Bryan Fischer placed the program as the leading seed in his latest projected playoff bracket for the second consecutive week.

The simulated path awards the squad an opening-round bye before a Cotton Bowl quarterfinal matchup against Indiana, followed by a Sugar Bowl semifinal meeting with Texas, and finally a championship showdown against Georgia.
