David Boon is set to take over as the Interim Chairman of Cricket Australia following the upcoming Annual General Meeting on October 28. This leadership change occurs after Mike Baird stepped down from his positions as chair and director amidst ongoing discussions surrounding the privatization of the Big Bash League, which notably included putting the Melbourne Renegades up for sale.
Baird held a position on the board for six years, leading as chair starting in February 2023. Boon brings prior administrative and playing experience to the role, having previously worked as a Cricket Tasmania director and chair, an international player, an ICC Match Referee, and a selector.
During his tenure, Baird oversaw a period where the organization reported record figures in revenue, profit, attendance, viewership, and participation growth. Following the upcoming Annual General Meeting, the governing body will initiate the formal procedure to select a permanent chair.
Boon expressed gratitude for his predecessor's contributions while acknowledging the exciting yet demanding landscape ahead for the sport. Meanwhile, Baird plans to assist Boon through a transition phase over the coming weeks.
