The Los Angeles Chargers have added depth to their quarterback depth chart by signing veteran Jake Browning, a backup who spent the past four seasons primarily behind Joe Burrow with the Cincinnati Bengals. Browning, who stands at 6’2 and 210 pounds, enters the 2026 season with 2,707 career passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions across his NFL career.
His most recent action came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, following stints with the Vikings and Bengals, where he made his NFL debut in 2023 after starting seven games for Cincinnati in Burrow’s absence. That season, Browning posted a 70% completion rate, 1,932 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while his 2025 campaign saw three starts and a less successful output of 771 yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
The move comes as the Chargers seek to bolster their backup options behind Justin Herbert, particularly after placing Trey Lance on injured reserve. Browning’s experience as a reliable backup could provide additional insurance for Los Angeles in emergency situations, adding another layer of stability to an already established quarterback group.
