Felix Auger-Aliassime was forced to withdraw from his fourth-round match in Shanghai after sustaining a knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the opening set against Casper Ruud. Following a consultation with coach Ivan Ljubicic, the Canadian player decided to stop playing, allowing Ruud to advance to his first-ever quarter-final at the tournament and complete a career sweep of reaching the last eight across all nine Masters 1000 events.
Ruud expressed sympathy for his opponent during a post-session press conference and wished him a quick recovery as Auger-Aliassime aims to regain full fitness for upcoming tournaments in Brussels, Basel, and Paris to preserve his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin. Ruud will face Rafael Jodar next in the quarter-final round.
