Following a heavy 41-13 defeat to the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables addressed his squad's struggles after falling to a two-win, two-loss record. The team opened their schedule by defeating UTEP, suffered a 17-10 setback against Michigan, rebounded versus New Mexico, and then faced the lopsided loss to Georgia.
Venables pointed directly to persistent mistakes, specifically ball security issues and turnovers under quarterback John Mateer, as the primary obstacles holding the program back.
The contest against Georgia turned decisively in the second quarter when a promising Oklahoma advance to the two-yard line ended with a sack and fumble returned by the Bulldogs for a touchdown, widening the deficit to 21-0. Venables acknowledged that the miscues drained momentum and noted confidence struggles within the group, though he emphasized that plenty of competitive action remains ahead in the schedule.
Despite praising the defense for forcing turnovers later in the contest and holding firm on short drives, the head coach stressed that carelessness with the football remains unacceptable.
