Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables has signed a six-year contract extension through the 2031 season, locking in a $10.5 million annual salary and securing his position despite the team's recent struggles. The Sooners entered Week 6 with a 2-2 record, including losses to Michigan and Georgia, raising questions about Venables' future after two losing seasons in his five-year tenure.
His new deal, announced in August 2026, extends his previous contract by two years and places him among the highest-paid coaches in college football, according to On3Sports. Venables led Oklahoma to its first College Football Playoff appearance since 2019 last season, though the team fell to Alabama in a 23-21 home loss.
The extension, praised by new athletic director Roger Denny for its emphasis on stability, comes amid a shift in leadership for the program. While Venables has a career record of 34-22, his bowl game performance remains inconsistent, with a 0-4 record in postseason play across his first four seasons.
A buyout under the new contract would reportedly cost Oklahoma between $55 and $60 million, up from the previous $26.2 million figure.
