Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed during his Monday press conference that Billy Edwards Jr. retains the starting quarterback job for North Carolina as the team prepares to face third-ranked Notre Dame following an open week.
Belichick noted that passing struggles in a recent 28-20 defeat against Clemson were an offensive-wide issue rather than the fault of the signal-caller alone. Edwards enters the upcoming matchup with prior strong performances this year, including a 15-for-20 outing yielding 244 yards and two scores against ETSU, alongside a 232-yard game without an interception in an opening victory versus TCU.
However, the previous contest against Clemson highlighted major passing deficiencies as Edwards managed only 13 completions on 30 attempts for 135 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, resulting in a 43.3 completion percentage and 4.5 yards per pass. Despite a strong ground attack that generated 214 rushing yards and an initial 17-6 halftime lead, the Tar Heels failed to secure the win, prompting questions about how long the veteran starter will maintain his position if similar offensive struggles resurface.
