The Big Ten has acknowledged an officiating error in Nebraska’s recent 48–23 victory over Maryland, where a roughing-the-snapper penalty was incorrectly applied after the Huskers’ final touchdown. According to conference officials, the penalty should have allowed Nebraska kicker Kyle Cunanan to retry his missed extra-point attempt, but the ruling was enforced on the subsequent kickoff instead.
The officiating crew responsible—including referee Jim Wharrie, head linesman Ric Hinkamper, and others—has faced renewed scrutiny after the same group drew criticism for a disputed clock-review decision in Michigan’s last-second win over Western Michigan earlier this season. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule highlighted the confusion during a postgame press conference, noting miscommunication over whether the kick was good before the penalty was enforced.
The Big Ten’s statement confirmed the error, marking the second time this officiating crew has been at the center of controversy in recent weeks.
