Air Force quarterback Liam Szarka will miss the remainder of the 2026 campaign due to a lower-leg injury, a setback that follows a strong performance in Saturday's 14-9 victory over Navy. The junior, who rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns in that game, currently leads the Mountain West Conference in rushing yards per game with 98 and has seven rushing touchdowns on the season.
This marks the second consecutive year Szarka's season has been cut short, as he previously suffered a broken arm in November 2025 while playing for UConn. Coach Troy Calhoun has indicated that Szarka is targeted to return in 2027, though the specific nature and timeline of the recovery remain unclear.
With Szarka out, sophomore Evan Medders is expected to take over as the starter for the upcoming game against Northern Illinois. Medders, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound player, has already contributed 109 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in three of the four games he has played this season.
The Falcons remain in solid standing at 3-1, having just ended a five-game losing streak, but the team's offensive efficiency may face challenges without Szarka's dual-threat capabilities. Calhoun, in his 20th season, will need to adjust the game plan to accommodate the new signal-caller while maintaining the defense's strong performance, which held Navy to just one successful third-down conversion out of 11 attempts.
