Gareth Batty has ended a decades-long association with Surrey to accept an assistant coaching role with the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings. During his tenure as head coach, he steered the county squad to three consecutive championship crowns alongside a pair of appearances at T20 Finals Day.
His departure concludes a career at the club spanning over two decades, which included multiple stints as a player, leadership as team captain, and hundreds of appearances resulting in more than 500 wickets across all formats. Director of cricket Alec Stewart acknowledged the difficulty of the departure while noting the significance of the opportunity for the former England spinner.
