Austin Lemieux, the 30-year-old son of hockey legend Mario Lemieux, made history in golf by shooting a 66 at the PGA Tour qualifier in Winter Haven, Florida. The score earned him a spot in next week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship, marking his first PGA Tour event while still maintaining amateur status.
Lemieux’s round carried personal significance, as the number 66 was famously worn by his father during his iconic NHL career—a tribute that resonated deeply with the younger Lemieux. His journey to the PGA Tour has been unconventional, transitioning from a former Arizona State University hockey player to a golfer who recently won a Minor League Golf Tour event in Florida and a Pennsylvania mid-amateur championship in September.
The qualifier field included three other golfers who also secured their place in the tournament: Adam Long (64), Matthew Anderson (66), and Willie Mack III (66). The tournament begins next Thursday at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda, offering Austin a chance to shine on the professional stage in a sport where his family has long had a presence, including his father’s renowned golfing skills during his playing days.
