U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes halted tree-cutting operations at East Potomac Golf Links after more than 529 trees were removed over the weekend, raising serious questions about federal oversight.
The judge’s temporary injunction came in response to plaintiffs’ emergency request, following reports that hundreds of trees were felled without sufficient advance notice to the court. Reyes criticized the government’s handling of the matter, calling its credibility into question.
The National Park Service had previously identified the trees as noncontributing to the historic landscape, but the rapid pace of removals—accelerating from Friday to Sunday—sparked legal intervention. Reyes demanded further testimony from Interior Department officials to clarify authorization and decision-making.
The case now shifts focus beyond redevelopment debates, as physical changes to the property have already occurred while its future remains unresolved.
