At 92 years old, Cecil Calhoun remains a living legend at the Country Club of Columbus, where he has spent nearly a century immersed in the sport. A 1952 graduate of Columbus High School, Calhoun played collegiate golf at LSU, winning a national championship in 1955 before serving as a colonel in the U.S.
Air Force. Even now, he walks the course he knows intimately, having once lived across the street and sneaked onto the property as a child.
His deep connection to the club extends beyond personal history—he’s a board member of the Haskins Foundation, which hosted the 2026 Haskins Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament at the venue for the first time this week. Calhoun’s sharp memory still recalls legendary golfers like Jack Nicklaus, who once struggled with the challenging 18th green during a visit, and he continues to practice as if every round could be his last shot at glory.
