The Philadelphia Eagles have made an unusual roster move by retaining right tackle Lane Johnson on their 53-man roster following his abrupt retirement after Week 4. Johnson, who cited mental health as the reason for stepping away, had been inactive for the team’s Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams and was expected to be placed on the reserve/retired list.
Instead, the Eagles kept him active, a decision driven primarily by salary cap strategy rather than any expectation he would return to the field. Johnson’s contract includes a $23 million salary this season, with $1.3 million as base pay and $21.7 million in option bonuses.
Half of the option bonus ($10.85 million) has already been paid, while the remaining $10.85 million is due on December 1. The proration of these bonuses spreads the financial impact across Philadelphia’s salary cap, with $4.34 million allocated annually from 2026 through 2030.
By keeping Johnson on the roster, the Eagles avoid potential recoupment of the 2026 option bonus, which would have been forfeited if he had been placed on the retired list. The team also retains flexibility in case Johnson reverses his decision, though his stated focus on mental health makes a return unlikely.
