‘You shouldn’t be able to represent the USA’: Riley Gaines not happy as WNBA players skip national anthem

Riley Gaines recently criticized the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries for exiting the court prior to the national anthem during the first two games of the WNBA Finals. Gaines argued on social media that athletes who do not stand for the anthem should be disqualified from Olympic competition, though reports indicate the players were simply off the floor during the ceremony rather than kneeling.

Similar departures from the court during the anthem have occurred in other basketball contexts, such as when Kim Mulkey coached her team during an Elite Eight matchup.
