Alabama right guard Michael Carroll admitted that coach Adrian Klemm called their performance against Tennessee an embarrassment. The Crimson Tide struggled in Knoxville, giving up five sacks and managing only 54 rushing yards.
Carroll believes the team must focus on fundamentals like hand placement and footwork to reduce sacks.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer noted that communication and preparation were issues, especially in a hostile away game. The unit has allowed 21 sacks through seven games, ranking 131st in the nation and second-worst in the SEC.
This lack of protection has impacted developing quarterback Keelon Russell, who has also been criticized for holding the ball too long. The line also lacked continuity against Tennessee, as Mal Waldrep made his first career start at center in place of Racin Delgatty.
