‘Is it because they’re transphobic?’: Riley Gaines bashes WNBA for Enes Kanter decision

Former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines recently criticized the WNBA following the league's decision to bar former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom from entering the upcoming 2027 draft. Gaines pointed out the irony of the organization quickly identifying male characteristics to rule Kanter and Royce White ineligible, while allegedly struggling to formally define what constitutes a woman in broader athletic policy debates.

The controversy also brought renewed attention to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert as her tenure winds down.
