Kapil Dev expressed regret over the retirement of Virat Kohli from the longest format of the game, stating that the former captain walked away too soon after a career spanning 123 Tests. The legendary all-rounder noted that Kohli stopped short of reaching 10,000 runs and believes the batter will eventually recognize that he could have extended his tenure in red-ball cricket.
Despite wishing for a longer career, Kapil declined to urge the 37-year-old veteran to reverse his decision. Having walked away from Tests following an announcement on May 12, 2025, Kohli has maintained that his choice is definitive while continuing to excel in limited-overs play.
