Grant Forrest capped a historic week in golf by securing his first professional victory outside Scotland with a dramatic final-round birdie at the Spanish Open. The 33-year-old’s last-hole putt sealed a £480,000 prize and earned him automatic invitations to next year’s Masters and The Open Championship.
Forrest, who had previously played in The Open at Muirfield and Carnoustie, also surged 156 places in the world rankings to 140th—a career-best leap. His win, the third on the DP World Tour, came after partner Victor Perez fell short of overtaking Eugenio Chacarra, leaving Forrest to claim the title in a clutch performance.
The victory followed an exhausting 24-hour journey from Madrid to New Delhi for the DP World India Championship, where Forrest admitted the win brought ‘a lot of validation and relief’ after years of professional competition. Speaking to BBC Scotland, he credited breathing techniques and routine discipline for his composure, particularly on the final putt, which he described as a surreal moment after his hands were visibly shaking.
Forrest’s rise from the European Challenge Tour to the DP World Tour in 2018—alongside compatriots Robert MacIntyre and David Law—now positions him as part of a growing wave of Scottish talent, including recent champions Connor Syme and Scott Jamieson. The Masters debut in April, where Forrest was a spectator in 2019, remains a dream still unfolding, though he expressed awe at the prospect of playing at St Andrews next year.
