Veteran professional golfer Rocco Mediate recently voiced strong opposition to the sport's long-standing prohibition against anchored putting during a podcast appearance with Johnny Wunder. Mediate argued that the regulation addressed a non-existent advantage, noting that very few competitors actually utilized the technique prior to the governing bodies stepping in.
The restriction, known officially as Rule 14-1b, was proposed in late 2012 and implemented at the start of 2016 by the USGA and R&A. While the policy did not ban the clubs themselves, it outlawed bracing the putter against the body and applied a two-stroke penalty for infractions.
Before the prohibition took effect, competitors employing anchored methods triumphed in four out of six major championships, including victories by Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Ernie Els, and Adam Scott.
