Return of the feature back: Why NFL running backs are making a massive comeback

September 29, 2026

Pro football is experiencing a notable resurgence in traditional ground attacks, moving away from a pass-heavy era. While the league once saw frequent 4,000-yard passing seasons accompanied by declining rushing output, recent statistics indicate a sharp shift back toward featuring primary running backs.

Over the past four campaigns, the average number of rushers clearing the 1,000-yard mark has risen to 15 per year, compared to just 9.6 in the preceding five-year span. Through the opening three weeks of the 2026 season, an impressive 18 players are currently tracking toward that milestone, bolstered by rising offensive percentage trends in run plays and diminishing quarterback rushing designs.
