Former youth wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami recently discussed the international journey of Yuzvendra Chahal during a podcast appearance, expressing astonishment that the leg-spinner has never received a Test cap for the national side. Goswami compared cricketing greatness using football icons, likening Virat Kohli to Ronaldo and Shane Warne to Messi, while suggesting that Chahal could have achieved legendary status if he had been given opportunities in the five-day format.
Although Chahal made his debut in limited-overs cricket in June 2016 against Zimbabwe and went on to claim a historic six-wicket haul in T20 internationals alongside a 2024 T20 World Cup title appearance, team management has consistently preferred Kuldeep Yadav for the longest format. Goswami also mentioned Amit Mishra's earlier contributions and noted a lack of prominent leg-spinners produced by the country since Anil Kumble's era.
